OUR
STORY
When we look back now and ask ourselves, "Why did we choose garlic?"
We have a hard time answering that question. I think we came to this
decision because of many different circumstances and events.
I had always taken antibiotics for throat infections and had been
advised from an aunt to eat garlic instead. She suggested I substitute
a natural herbal concoction instead of prescriptions. I took her advice
and ate garlic daily. My new remedy soon became obvious to my co-workers
but I never had any more throat infections. I remember joking with
them, especially when the stress levels rose that I was going to quit
my job and become a garlic farmer. As this was well before we found
our new land, I had no intention or ever dreamed that this would actually
happen, BUT IT DID!
In the spring of 2005, my husband Darrel and I purchased a small
farm 3 miles north of Yorkton. We knew we wanted to do something
with this land to generate revenue but weren't sure what.
It had to be something that didn't require many acres or a large
investment and something that showed potential for generating extra
income in a relatively short period of time.
I would now like to introduce Bob. He is a local garlic grower who
I got my garlic from. One time while visiting with Bob I mentioned
that we were looking for some sort of crop to grow to generate extra
income. He suggested garlic. Bob had been growing garlic in this
area for seven years and I regarded him as somewhat of a garlic
guru.
I took the idea home to my husband and after a short discussion
we decided that growing garlic was our destiny. Through the next
summer we received much advice and guidance from Bob. He always
said, "if you plant it they will come". Bob continues
to give advice from time to time but our relationship has changed
slightly. It is now a little more competitive. Who can grow the
best garlic!
